A twin bore, 250m, dual carriageway tunnel as part of a 6.5km bypass of the town of Baldock. This 'cut and cover' scheme was constructed as part of a design and build project between main contractor Norwest Holst (Vinci) and consultants Capita Symonds.
This road scheme was necessary to relieve congestion on the old A505 route through the centre of Baldock between Royston and the A1(M).
VVB were appointed by Norwest Holst to project manage the M&E requirements of the contract from inception through installation, commissioning and delivery of the finished scheme.
Throughout the design and preconstruction phase VVB provided technical knowledge and experience to all elements of the M&E systems and liaised with civils to produce a complete turnkey solution. This proactive approach was continued throughout the permanent installation where VVB project managed the M&E installation including all of the specialist tunnel and approach road systems.
The client also required SCADA Operational Surveillance and Control by Hertfordshire Police at there headquarters and Maintenance warnings to Hertfordshire Highways both based in Welwyn Garden City. This was achieved through uplink via BT Redcare.
Due to our proactive open approach and design input this has resulted in a reduced M&E installation timescale which has assisted in the opening date for the scheme of16th March 2006, eight months ahead of schedule.
