The single bore, two lane, 800m tunnel was constructed by a joint venture between Taylor Woodrow (UK) LTD and the French Tunnelling Contractor, Perforex.
This road scheme was necessary to relieve heavy freight traffic from driving through the small Kent town centre to reach the Ferry Port en route to France and Belgium.
In order to deliver the scheme financially and within challenging program deadlines the contract was executed using the NEC form of contract under partnering arrangements.
VVB were appointed by Taylor Woodrow on a target cost basis to manage from inception through installation and commissioning to completion and delivery of the Mechanical and Electrical elements of the contract.
VVB provided all the Temporary Mechanical and Electrical services throughout the construction phase of this contract which included all engineering support, installation and maintenance of prevaulting tunnel method.
VVB carried out the Building Services for the Tunnel Service Building along with the installation of the permanent M & E works, which included the specialist control, communications and subsystem equipment. The client also required Operational Surveillance of the Chestfield Tunnel to be carried out at the Ramsgate Control Building. The distance between the two sites is approx 30KM and this was achieved by utilising a microwave link.
Our proactive open approach and major involvement throughout all elements of the contract along with our ability to work and interface successfully with the civils, consultants and End user as part of a team allowed VVB to assist in the smooth transition form completion of the Tunnel construction into Permanent work installation. This enabled VVB to deliver substantial benefits on Design, Installation and Program and our core technical base ensured a high level of support was always maintained.
