Roads and Highways - A38 Tunnel

A38 Queensway & St Chad Tunnel Maintenance

Following a successful project during 2013 through to autumn 2014 where VVB were involved in the refurbishment of all mechanical and electrical systems to the A38 Queensway and St Chad tunnel in Birmingham, VVB tendered for the maintenance contract for these tunnels in June 2016 and after review and evaluation were awarded the ongoing maintenance contract for these two tunnels which serve around 85,000 vehicles each day.

Working collaborative, in accordance with BS 11000, VVB are under contract with Amey and Birmingham City Council to deliver the five year maintenance service to maintain the systems for each of the tunnels. The systems included within the works include:

  • Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)

Tunnel Ventilation

Control Systems

  • Field Instrumentation, including air quality monitoring (AQM)

Fire Safety Systems

  • Fireman’s Panels
  • CCD Toblerone Signs

Traffic Monitoring Systems

  • Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) PTZ – point tilt zoom
  • Video Automatic Incident Detection (VAID)
  • Tunnel and Portal Lane Control Signs (LCS) Variable Message Signs (VMS)
